Job Shadow
On 8/17/16 I had the privilege to shadow Officer Chris Dempsey. I got to follow him on of his job for half the day and it was so much fun. I was lucky to be able to answer to calls with him and look for stolen cars and property. Also what i thought was really cool was that I translated for him in more than one occasion. The whole time it was all hands on so the whole experience was much more realistic and a look at what i might be doing in a couple years. I choose to shadow him because i think there's a bing chance of me joining this profession later in life. It was convenient because i did it in the town i grew up in Lindsay.
I got to experience a variety of different things that morning, from dealing with drug addicts to giving advice to families whose kids are beating them to having to assist an older woman off the ground onto her bed. The one i won’t forget is when me and Officer Chris responded to a call of a woman who had fallen and needed help getting back up. So we arrived at the place where the woman lived at at first i thought to myself, he's probably going to tell me to wait for him in the car. But oh boy was i wrong he gave me a set gloves and said “c'mon let's go”. So I followed him towards the apartment and at the door there was a girl waiting for us and said there a 6’0 220 pound lady who fell. So I followed Officer into the house and we struggled a bit but he got the job done we picked her up onto her bed. Like I said earlier everything was very hands on.
I learned so much on my shadow, I got to see with my own eyes how hard officers actually work for us, and their communities. Their jobs are not easy but they do it with a passion because they know there bettering lives. I loved the feeling you receive after helping someone it’s such a rewarding feeling knowing that you actually impacted someone, there’s no substitute for that feeling so that has to best thing i got out of it all. Throughout the whole day i could not find one thing that i disliked about this profession i loved everything. After this experience it only makes me more excited to begin my journey in becoming a police officer. It made me realize that this really is what i want to do with my life.
